曾經英國政府對於華為參與當地 5G 基建的態度相當寬鬆，大家都還以為他們要在這議題上與美國盟友對著幹。結果金融時報最近就報導指，獲英國官方透露要逐步淘汰在 5G 網路裡的華為裝置，目標在 2023 年完成。消息首先由 Daily Telegraph 爆出，指英國首相 Boris Johnson 經常對於允許華為的參與「抱有嚴重憂慮」，這想法更是在新冠疫情的爆發時再度激化。

華為高級副總裁張國威，在回應 FT 的查詢時代表這「並不合理」，認為英國選擇他們公司是因為當地需要「最好的技術、更多選擇、創新、供應商。」

美國自然會歡迎相關做法，因為他們一直都有擔心盟友使用華為設備到 5G 網路時會危害國家安全。然而，對於英國政府和電訊商來說，如此的異動就代表了再一筆大錢要花，因為單單以 BT 為例，預估他們是盡用 35% 華為裝置限額的規定，涉及 5 億英鎊。如果是要全數換走的話，另購相關設備的成本支出肯定會超過這數字，同時也會打亂英國光纖基建的計劃。無論如何，近來的局勢發展都顯示了，華為在西方 5G 發展的佔比必然會再被打壓。
