Tseng's allegiance is not for sale

A COOL $25 million of Chinese money couldn't buy the nationality of Yani Tseng, who proudly took tiny Taiwan to world No.1 with her yesterday in a four-shot victory at the ANZ RACV Ladies Masters.
Tseng's joy at Royal Pines soared far beyond the closing round of 68 that swept her to a 24-under total and a clear margin over Canberra's impressive Nikki Campbell and American Stacy Lewis.
It enabled Tseng (67-66-63-68) to realise her childhood dream of rising to No.1 in the world rankings because she has ended the 15-week run at the top of Korea's Jiyai Shin.
"Amazing. It sounds really good when you say that because I wasn't expecting that it would come so soon," Tseng grinned when introduced as world No.1 for the first time.
There was also something special to achieving it on the Gold Coast where portraits of former world No.1s Karrie Webb, Laura Davies and Annika Sorenstam form part of Champions Drive away from the 18th green.
"The first time I came here, I told all my friends, 'one day I want my picture there on Champions Drive, one day I will'," said Tseng, who first appeared here as a shy 16-year-old amateur in 2005.
Tseng, 22, is quietly spoken but a fierce patriotism beats within.
A busload of Taiwanese fans drove down the highway from Brisbane to cheer every shot.
In September, Tseng's father revealed a Chinese company had offered his daughter a five-year, $25 million deal with the perks of private jet use and a Beijing apartment.
The catch was turning her back on Taiwan and becoming a citizen of China.
"I didn't think too much about China offer. I'm just very proud to represent Taiwanese everywhere," Tseng said.
China's leading female golfer, Shanshan, Feng is ranked No.79 in the world so the deal was a clear pitch for China to have a gold medal contender when golf is an Olympic sport in 2016.
Tseng is a national treasure in her country, which had a haul of only four bronze medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in taekwondo and weightlifting.
Tseng had a minor wobble when a poor drive on the par-four seventh cost her only bogey.
But Lewis didn't have the killer in her game to capitalise. Lewis missed a birdie putt of just over 1m on the eighth when she could have closed the gap to a single stroke.
By the time Tseng hit a pure four iron to nail an eagle three on the 15th, the gap was five. Game over.
"Yani is very solid in just about every part of her game and she's in the hunt just about every week," Webb said.
"She's a worthy world No.1 but there are a good group of girls at the top who want it just as much, so 2011 will be interesting."
